U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Merten, President of the Croatian Journalists Association Zdenko Duka,
and University of Zagreb Faculty of Political Sciences Dean Nenad Zakosek will make remarks
at the opening ceremony of a regional media conference: “Traditional Values In The New Media
Environment: A Regional Media Conference.” The opening ceremony will take place on
Thursday, November 15, at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Lepusiceva 6 (Dvorana A), and will
start at 18:00 hours.

At the opening, Ambassador Merten will also announce the donation of over $8,000 of equipment for
the University of Zagreb’s journalism school’s student TV studio. This donation continues a tradition
of many years of partnership with the journalism school and the Faculty of Political Sciences, in which
the Embassy has provided other equipment and sponsored exchange programs, visiting professors
and speakers. Students from the Faculty of Political Sciences Journalism Department will assist and
actively participate in the regional media conference.

Participants from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro
and Macedonia will discuss issues related to journalism today: how to make the important
news interesting, and the interesting news important, in the context of emerging and converging
technologies, which are dramatically changing the media landscape worldwide and in Southeastern
Europe. The goal of the program is to lead journalists and editors to a new manner of thinking
about what their audiences need and want — more watchdog journalism and less bland political
rhetoric, plus more viewer/reader connection with the important stories of the day, with the focus on
investigative journalism.

The conference will take place at the Croatian Journalists Association, Perkovceva 2, Zagreb,
November 16-17, and the program will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16.

Three media experts from the United States will attend the conference to share their experience and
provide insights into the latest trends in the United States: Joe Bergantino, Co-Director of the New
England Center for Investigative Reporting; Dan Gillmor, Director of the Knight Center for Digital
Media Entrepreneurship, Kauffman Professor of Digital Media Entrepreneurship, Professor of Practice
at Arizona State University – Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communicatio; and
Joshua Benton, Director of the Nieman Journalism Lab – Harvard University.
