The last panel of the first day of the Conference started with Daria Marjanovic’s presentation American Way with Croatian View. Ms. Marjanovic is a Croatian TV journalist and professor at Zagreb University, Faculty of Political Science. At the beginning she highlighted one quote to describe situation in the media in 21st century:

Society doesn’t change when people adopt new tools, they change when they adopt new behaviours.

Ms. Marjanovic talked about what is news in convergent newsrooms means nowadays. She explained what the news is by the case of one and only massacre video from studnet cell phone and the case of Republic Media. The conclusion is that journalists today need to be multiskilled and also learn from each other as much as possible.

Prof. Marjanovic gave us some advices how to do a journalist’s job properly. One of them is to be the first to tell and she pointed out CNN for an example. Users of media content need interaction and want UGC (user generated content).

Three key words for media convergence , according to Ms. Darja Marjanovic, are:

  • community,
  • conversation and
  • confidence.

She also mentioned the three „musts“:

  • context,
  • transparency and
  • responsibility.

Last, but not least, Ms. Marjanovic concluded her presentation with three magic words journalists should always have in mind:

  • goal,
  • strategy and
  • education.

After Ms. Marjanovic, Mr. Dan Gilmor talked about collaborative journalism.  Ms. Gilmor warned us that the main part of interactivity with audience is not just the idea of making people do stuff, but working with people. He also explained one interesting thing about the US governemnt. American government hates to give up theirs documents, so they usually give their documents on Friday afternoon when everyone is going home. Ms. Gilmor mantioned BBC because it has a very occurate process for looking which medium can they trust. He concluded his speech with thought that many technical improvements were made in the media lately.

The last presentation of the first day of the Conference was about turning the new media environment into advantage for more qualitative content – the case of Croatian Television. It was held by Ivana Dragicevic, HTV journalist. She started her presentation with quotation from Joan Bakewell, programme presenter of BBC, who said in 1954:

It’s hard to realise that the TV became the center of the media, the object of business and channel of democracy.

After that, she explained a little bit more about the national TV station in Croatia. She presented the pluses and minuses of HRT which are, pluses first: technological resources, legal framework and „human“ factor. On the other hand, minuses are archaich structure, lack of initiative (money) and ,again, „human factor“. After a short briefing of the work of HRT, Ms. Dragicevic made us think about the challanges in Croatia for public TV, and they are:

  • EU regulations,
  • political and corporate influences,
  • free journalism
  • and high literacy rate.
