Jadranka is a traditional Croatian name, so of course you wouldn’t normally associate it with an Asian person. But this Erasmus student of the Faculty of Agriculture may not be what you expected at first – she’s transgender. For those of you still not quite familiar with the term, transgender are people who have a gender identity or gender expression different from their assigned sex. Now, you’ve probably heard of transsexuals as well, haven’t you? And some of you are probably wondering what the difference is between a transgender and transsexual person. Well, for one thing, all transsexual people are transgender as well, but not all transgender people are transsexual. By now you’re probably confused, so let me clear it up for you – transsexual men and women are those who desire medical assistance from one sex to another. So, next time you’re not sure about what term you should use when refferencing trans men and women, just say transgender and it should be no problem.
